the key is to stay that way

Recently I had a piece in a juried showcase on ARTslant and was very intrigued by a comment I received from 10 year old Artist Harris Khan.

This kid is truly talented and I'm sure will go far... he's already a legend in India.

One look and you won't be able to help but fall in love with this beautiful little soul.

I remember the exact moment I first looked into Jenn Grant's eyes...

Like a deer in the headlights she was trapped in the center of the front schoolyard, an obvious new girl, shy and lovely.

I stopped and watched as she was slowly pulled by the invisible string of her ally. Very carefully she made her exit, and I followed the departing path of her ringlets, ablaze in the early sun, bouncing on her turquoise velvet shoulders…

and I thought...

she’s the perfect girl!

It was twelve years before I even heard her speak.

Feeling quite surreal I stared at this beauty known only as a character in lost memories of youth. She was awkward, yet graceful … larger than life there on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth’s auditorium, ready to celebrate her new album.

When she finally opened her mouth to sing the first note slammed my heart. A flood of tears and memories quickly followed. I was in absolute awe.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been more proud.

DO IT DO IT RIGHT DO IT RIGHT NOW

pretty much exactly one year ago I sat at my desk at Collideascope all alone, everyone wrapped for the season and here I was coming in everyday, with no one but the Barbies to talk to

I got a little more familiar with the internet with no one there to catch me slacking

I discovered the blog, or rather clog, of one of my top teenage heroes
erika lopez

after reading her first entry it hit me

"what if flaming iguanas was a cartoon?

felt like the best idea ever... then a few entries later I find...

SHE'S MAKING FLAMING IGUANAS INTO A MOVIE

WOW

I let this one float in my brain a long time

maybe too long, because I almost forgot

but then I came across her blog again, this time I actually said my idea aloud to one of my oldest friends tanja, who responded with...

"we gotta do that"

and here we are

DOING IT

my hero is writing ME

sharing her art with ME

planning with ME

WOW

WOW

I feel blessed

stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

erika finally got our letter, love at first type!

just goes to show if you picture hard enough, and dream with honest sincerity, your life can be exactly what you want - what you've always known it should be

we all have so much potential, the key is to go forward fearless and full of appreciation

bryan recently asked me what I picture in my head to help me go to sleep (he hitchhikes)

took me a while to realize what I resort to when I'm having trouble

I picture my happy, perfect future
my self built house constructed of odd found pieces
surrounded by gardens and nature
sunshine and laughter
joy and love

on some occasions I opt to take the Jimmy Rabbitte route and picture conversations and adventures with my idols should we meet and become friends

I've used lunch with martha and karaoke with jason schwartzman to help me enter dreamland

I picture my store
I've always pictured my store

somewhere along the line I jinxed myself and told myself not to picture and plan... it might keep it from happening - I think that came from too much thinking about boys as a teen

screw that bullshit
picture away

I'm off to bed now
and I'm going to picture my future
my future with the welfare queen herself

monkey memento

I did somewhat of an art exchange on Facebook recently and this is the monkey that I created for miss Karma, my favorite former North Ender, who now resides in Kingston.

Kingston Ontario that is! Not Kingston the town before Middleton, where I was born, and where I (quite enthusiastically) assumed Karma must be from when we first met in the tenth grade.

That assumption led to an instant love, and even though Karma is back in her own neck of the woods, she'll always live in my memories... which are vast and vibrant!

a little experiment of the giraffe kind...

I was inspired by a wood carving at my friend Jen's the other day and decided to attempt a giraffe. I'm just in love with the shape of his body... his spots on the other hand proved to be a bit of a task. I chose a rather thick alpaca wool for the spots, they're quite raised, creating a neat effect. He's certainly one of a kind.

Free with the next 8 purchases!

Along with my normal addition of goodies, the next 8 purchases at my Etsy shop, pistacia.etsy.com, will include a copy of the very limited edition trial version of "Brand New Works" for FREE!

This version of "Brand New Works" is a 12 page postcard collection of my 2008 works.

My first attempt at printing was met by many accidents, one of which being the use of the wrong bottle of glue. The end result however was 10 special little books, all bound with silver ribbon and printed with very delicate ink. Due to the improper use of glue each booklet unfortunately has overly easy to remove pages... perhaps not such a bad thing after all!
